We make a homemade mint schnapps with garden mint to flavor these simple candies. To make them, a homemade fondant (not the gross kind that covers cakes, a lovely soft, supple sugar-dough that we make from scratch) is quickly run through our chocolate enrobing machine to create the thinnest possible layer of chocolate encasing all that beautiful refreshing mintiness.
Selma Miriam is the founder of Bloodroot Feminist Vegetarian Restaurant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where I worked, off and on, for a decade. Her breadth of knowledge, bracingly opinionated politics, and commitment to her community make her an inspiration to all who know her. I went to Bloodroot as a young cook eager to learn about a business that seemed to combine all my passions. Years later I have found in Selma a best friend over forty years my senior whose opinions I can trust and whose excitements and discoveries I delight in sharing.
